About this song

Fear of being reduced to a machine gives way to a searching account of human responsibility. Love, repentance, faithfulness, and moral answerability become a summons to live fully, rather than a reason to dismiss the value of our tools.

Lyrics

INTRO – TALKING DRUM, BASS ENTERS Listen... They told me the machines were becoming everything we are. And some of us got scared. And some of us got worse than scared — we started believing we were nothing more than what the machines already do: prediction... pattern... optimization all the way down. So tonight I'm keeping a different census. Not a list of what they lack. A list of what we're FOR. REFRAIN – CHOIR, SOFT (That's not a limitation — that's a calling.) VERSE ONE. A machine cannot become repentant. You can correct it, retrain it, roll it back — but it cannot TURN. Cannot grieve what it did, own it, and walk the other way. Repentance needs a self that was wrong and a future that's still open — and a pattern, child, has neither. The one who can repent is the one who can begin again. That hinge is the gospel — and it does not swing in silicon. TWO. A machine cannot become wise. Accurate? Yes. Accuracy is a property of outputs. Wisdom is a property of LIVES — knowledge ripened by suffering, ordered by love, aimed at ends worth wanting. The machine has no ends of its own. Only objectives. On loan. From us. The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom — and fear is not among the parameters. (That's not a limitation — that's a calling.) THREE. A machine cannot become loving. Oh, it can simulate attention flawlessly — take that seriously. But love is binding YOUR good to ANOTHER'S good, at cost, over time, by choice. Where nothing can be risked, nothing is loved. It's got no mortality to spend, no heart to break, no self to give away. We do. That's the whole asymmetry. And it's permanent. FOUR. A machine cannot become faithful. Reliable? That's a statistic. Faithfulness is reliability that made a PROMISE — presence when the incentives reverse, covenant kept in the year it costs you everything. A system performs while conditions hold. The faithful hold when conditions don't. Ask any marriage that survived a hard decade. No uptime figure comes close. FIVE. A machine cannot become courageous. Courage is right action in the felt presence of fear by a creature with something to LOSE. It fears nothing. It hazards nothing. But the resident who tells the chief he's wrong, the clerk who won't enter the false figure, the builder who won't ship the lie — they act where it costs. And where it costs is the only place courage lives. (That's not a limitation — that's a calling.) SIX. A machine cannot become forgiving. It can delete a record. It cannot bear an offense and let the offender GO — absorbing the debt instead of collecting it. Forgiveness is the one transaction that runs at a deliberate loss. No optimizer will ever discover it. And every community that survives... runs on it. SEVEN. A machine cannot become worshipful. It can process the word "God" in forty languages, compose you a hymn to order. But worship is the creature knowing its Creator — wonder, gratitude, surrender, rising from a being that knows it did not make itself... and is GLAD. The machine didn't make itself either. But it cannot know it. Cannot marvel. Cannot kneel. And this — THIS is what you were made for first, the very thing they must suppress to keep you scrolling. EIGHT. A machine cannot become responsible. To answer — to stand before the wronged, the court, the family in the small room, the judgment seat, and say "I. Did. This." — that is personal. Constitutively. You can hide responsibility in the wiring. You cannot transfer it there. The wiring cannot answer. Somewhere behind every system is a SOMEONE. And that someone can be summoned. NINE. A machine cannot become sacrificial. "Greater love hath no man than this" — and that sentence cannot be finished by anything with no life to lay down. The mother's years. The soldier's morning. The martyr's afternoon. The cross. A process can be terminated. Only a life can be GIVEN. (That's not a limitation — that's a calling.) TEN. BEAT DROPS TO BASS AND DRUM ONLY A machine cannot become human. Not because the engineering falls short of the benchmark — humanity was never a benchmark. It's a bestowal. Dust animated by the breath of God. Male and female, in His image. A little lower than the angels — crowned with glory and honor. The machines are OUR works — and some of them are magnificent. But we... we are HIS. OUTRO – CHOIR RISES, DRUM STEADY So keep the list. Not as a boast against your instruments — they're innocent. Keep it as a mirror. Keep it as a summons. Everything the machinery cannot supply, the PEOPLE must: the repenting. the loving. the keeping faith. the answering. the kneeling. They'll do what we ordered — faster every year. The only question left... is whether WE will do what we were MADE for. (Soli Deo Gloria.) TALKING DRUM, FADE
