About this song

The road to Philippi carries the song from a riverside gathering into the darkness of imprisonment. Worship rises where freedom seems absent, making midnight a place of witness and unexpected possibility rather than the end of hope.

Lyrics

INTRO (slow blues piano, chains clanking rhythm) VERSE 1 A man of Macedonia called by night, "Come over and help us!" So they sailed to Philippi And found the women praying by the river. There was Lydia, seller of purple, The Lord opened her heart to believe; She and her household were baptized, And she said, "Come stay with me." VERSE 2 But a slave girl followed after, And Paul cast out the spirit in her; Her masters lost their profit, Dragged them to the rulers in a fury. They were beaten with rods, Thrown in the inner prison, Feet fastened in the stocks, And the door was shut. CHORUS (slow, deep) But at midnight, Paul and Silas Were praying and singing hymns to God, And the prisoners were listening, Listening to the song. BRIDGE (drums crash, tempo lifts) Then the earth began to tremble! (shake it) And the foundations began to quake! (shake it) Every door flew open! (open) Every chain was broke! (free) VERSE 3 The jailer woke and drew his sword, But Paul cried out, "Do yourself no harm! We are all here!" And trembling, He fell down at their feet in alarm: "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, And you will be saved, you and your house." And that night he washed their stripes. FINAL CHORUS (key change, full choir shout) Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ! And you will be saved, you and your house! At midnight we will sing, At midnight we will sing, No chain can hold the praises of the King! OUTRO Rejoicing, he believed in God, With all his house. Hallelujah.
