About this song

A dispute over who may belong brings the Church together to listen and discern. The song turns from imposed conditions toward the gift of grace, asking a growing community to recognize salvation as God’s work rather than a boundary to police.

Lyrics

INTRO (marimba and choir hum) VERSE 1 Some came down from Judea, teaching, "Unless you're circumcised, you cannot be saved"; Paul and Barnabas stood against them, And the brothers went up to the elders to weigh. The apostles met with the elders, And after much debate had passed, Peter stood and spoke of Cornelius, How the Spirit came on them at last. VERSE 2 "God, who knows the heart, bore witness, Giving them the Spirit as to us; He made no distinction between us, Cleansing their hearts by faith in Jesus. Why then put God to the test By placing on their necks a yoke That neither we nor our fathers could bear?" This is the word that Peter spoke: CHORUS We believe that we will be saved Through the grace of the Lord Jesus, Just as they will; Not by works, not by our labor, Not by the law we could not fulfill; Saved through grace alone, Through faith alone, In Christ alone! VERSE 3 James stood up and quoted Amos: "I will rebuild David's fallen tent, That the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, And the Gentiles called by My name be sent." So they wrote a letter of welcome, And the church at Antioch read; They rejoiced at its encouragement, And were strengthened as they were led. FINAL CHORUS (full choir) OUTRO In Christ alone. Amen.
